The honest headline

Sri Lankan museums are uneven: world-class holdings, developing display. Go for the objects, forgive the labels. Mornings are quietest; many close on public holidays (frequent — full-moon Poya days monthly), so check the day before.

Colombo National Museum (1877)

The island's attic: Kandyan regalia, demon masks, palm-leaf manuscripts, moonstones, and the best ancient sculpture outside Anuradhapura. Two to three hours, then Viharamahadevi Park next door. Open 9–5 Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays and Poya holidays — the closed day changed in 2025, so confirm rather than trusting old guides. Foreign entry runs about LKR 1,000–1,200 with an extra camera fee; the combined Natural History ticket costs more.

Colombo's specialist museums

Ancient-city museums

Anuradhapura's Archaeological Museum and Polonnaruwa's museum punch above their weight — visit BEFORE the ruins, not after, and the stones make twice the sense. Mihintale's small museum earns its ten minutes the same way.

Folk and village museums

The Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum near Galle (masks, puppets, village life — great with kids) and the Ratnapura gem museum (mines plus stones, haggle-free shop). Jaffna's small museums are rebuilding; check locally what's open.

Practical rules

Carry small cash for tickets, allow bag checks, photography rules vary room to room (ask, don't assume — some rooms charge for cameras). Guides at the gate are worth it in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, skippable in Colombo where the labels suffice. Monday planning matters island-wide: the big Colombo museum's Monday closure can strand a first-day itinerary, so put the museum on Tuesday and Pettah on Monday instead.

Photo spots

The museum facades themselves (1877 colonial pile, Dutch gables), mask collections, moonstones in raking window light, the Galle warehouse's deep verandahs.
