Verdict first
Learn to surf or travel with kids: Weligama. Sunsets, whale trips and nights out: Mirissa. The towns sit minutes apart, so choose by sleep and mornings, and split three nights each if you can't decide.
Surf
Weligama's sandy bay forgives beginners with lessons and rentals along the beach; surf guides list it as the south's progression spot for first take-offs and trimming (TaxiGo 2026, WeWave south guide). Expect roughly $15–30 for a private beginner lesson (LKR 6,000–10,000) and $1.50–3/hour for board-only rental. Watch one lesson before booking — a teacher who explains on the sand beats one who just shouts "stand up". Ready for more? Midigama's reefs, one bay east, run intermediate coaching around $30–40 (bring reef booties). Mirissa suits confident surfers on smaller days. Sleep where your break is — dawn tuk rides eat money and mood. South season runs roughly November to April for both; our season guide explains the monsoon flip to the east.

Nights and food
Mirissa stays up later with the beach strip; Weligama sleeps earlier for dawn sessions. Both cost more than Matara for the same rice and curry — see our Matara guide for the budget counterweight. Between them runs the coast road bus every few minutes plus endless tuks — many travellers sleep Weligama and dine in Mirissa, the reverse commute never working as well.

Crowds and cost
At peak (December–March), Mirissa prices and crowds spike first. Weligama spreads along a longer bay. Budget move: sleep Weligama, sunset and dine in Mirissa. Calm seekers: continue to Tangalle.
Day trips from each
Mirissa harbour whales, Galle Fort one way, Matara/Polhena the other — details in Colombo to South transport for arrivals and in our 7-day route for the week shape. Travelling with kids? Weligama's sandy shallows beat Mirissa's shore break; book a family room off the beach road for quiet nights.
