The four ways south

Coastal train (Colombo Fort → Galle → Matara) is the scenic favourite: ocean views, cheap fares, slow rhythms. Colombo–Galle runs about 2.5 hours, Colombo–Matara nearly 4 hours in commonly reported timings (Escapemanila schedule compilation) — verify the current timetable. Note the honest catch: on this route most seats are unreserved, so prebooking is generally neither possible nor needed (Seat61 Sri Lanka guide); board early at Fort (counters for the southern line) and the official reservation schedule shows where reservation fees apply.

Expressway bus is fastest point-to-point: air-con services down the southern expressway toward Galle and Matara, commonly departing from the Bastian Mawatha/Makumbura-area terminals rather than Fort itself, so add the cross-city hop (Tripadvisor, Common Wanderer). Local coastal bus is cheapest and slowest, fine with light bags — the red SLTB workhorses stop everywhere and cost little more than coins.

Private driver costs most and wins for families, boards, and multi-stop days (Galle Fort en route, bags safe). Expect roughly USD 45–85 a day for car + driver with fuel, more for a van (USD 65–140), whole vehicle not per person (Catch Ceylon 2026 guide). Confirm fuel, tolls and driver accommodation in writing — "fuel included" varies by operator.

Choose by trip

Train for the journey with light luggage. Expressway bus for a tight schedule to one base. Driver for arrivals with stops or airport-day certainty. From Galle or Matara stations onward, the last tuk or local bus to Weligama/Mirissa/Tangalle is part of the cost — agree it first (see our mistakes guide).

Airport first: landing to Fort

Most southbound journeys start at Bandaranaike Airport, 30km north of Colombo. The 187 bus runs to Colombo Fort in roughly 40–50 minutes via the expressway for about LKR 120; a taxi via the same expressway runs LKR 2,500–3,000 and halves the faff (Triplyzer airport guide). Land before noon and you can be on a southbound train the same afternoon; land late and sleep in Colombo — night arrivals plus night trains equal misery.

First-timer default

Train or highway bus down while fresh, one base from our beach ranking, private driver only for the multi-stop or airport day.
