Sri Lanka with Kids: 10-Day Family Itinerary

Who this is for

Families with kids roughly 5 and up. Slow mornings, pools every second day, a private driver throughout — with kids, a driver (typically LKR 18,000–30,000/day with car) pays for itself in naps and skipped bus queues.

The route

Landmarks you'll actually remember

The Sigiriya rock fortress, Dambulla's painted caves, the Temple of the Tooth ceremony, Nine Arches, and Galle's lighthouse. Five landmarks in ten days is plenty for young attention spans.

Fun things to do

Elephant safari (Udawalawe), beginner surf at Weligama for teens, turtle hatchery visit, cooking class in Ella (kids get their own hopper pan), stilt-fishermen viewpoints near Ahangama, the Kandyan dance show with fire walking.

Favourites kids name

The train, the elephants, and the pool. In that order, every time. Don't over-schedule temple interiors — kids remember animals and motion.

Cost shape

Driver + mid-range family rooms dominate. Skip Yala with small kids: long bumpy tracks and 4:30am starts for a leopard you probably won't see. Udawalawe costs less and delivers elephants. Carry snacks everywhere — town-to-town drives run 3–5 hours with few good stops.

When to go

July–October brings the Minneriya elephant gathering — worth timing the whole trip around if your kids love animals. December–April gives the calmest beaches. April is brutally hot and crowded (New Year week); with small kids, prefer December–March.

Getting around with kids

Private driver for the full ten days. Bring your own booster seat — rental car seats are rare. One reserved-seat train ride (Kandy → Ella) for the experience; do the rest by road so nap schedules survive. Cap driving days at four hours; the itinerary above already does.

Where to stay

Family rooms with pools: Sigiriya eco-lodges, Kandy guesthouses, an Ella family suite, an Unawatuna beach hotel. Ask for ground-floor rooms at booking — many guesthouses are stair-only. Confirm the pool has a shallow end; lifeguards are uncommon, so swim supervision is on you.

What to eat on this route

Hoppers, string hoppers, fried rice, roti and endless tropical fruit — most kids eat happily within a day. Hotels will do early bland dinners on request; just ask at check-in. Carry rehydration salts and familiar snacks for long drives.

Budget: actual numbers

Family of four, mid-range: roughly $150–220/day — driver $60–90/day, family rooms $60–120, food and entries on top. Sigiriya ($35) and Polonnaruwa ($30) entries add up times four, so pick your paid sites deliberately.

Packing for this trip

Kids' reef shoes (urchins exist), sun hats, rehydration salts, a headtorch each for power cuts, a small backpack per kid for the train, and any prescription meds with copies — pharmacies are good in cities, thin elsewhere.

Book before you fly

The driver (reviews mentioning families, not just "good driver"), train seats, the Udawalawe jeep, and Sigiriya tickets strategy: be at the gate at 6:30am to beat heat and crowds. Turtle hatchery visits need no booking.

Health notes

Bottled water for under-5s; older kids handle filtered fine. Mosquito repellent at dawn and dusk (dengue is the real risk, not malaria). Sun off 11–3. Nearest genuinely good hospitals: Kandy and Colombo — carry insurance details on your phone.
