Point Pedro and Sakkotai Cape — Jaffna Travel Guide
Cover photo: Matt Dany (Unsplash)
Why go
Windy headland town at the island's northern tip, about 30 km northeast of Jaffna, with a lighthouse and long Vallipuram-style beaches nearby. Go in the morning for light and calmer seas; tuk-tuk or bus from Jaffna. The lighthouse compound is usually viewed from outside.
Best for
Lighthouse and land's-end chasers; Sri Lanka's northernmost point
Good to know
Jaffna District, Northern Province. Pair this stop with nearby places in the directory or find it pinned on the map.
Watch outs
Prices, hours and access rules change — confirm locally and treat anything undated as a lead, not a promise. Common island-wide traps (overcharging, steering, ticket games) are listed on its destination page.

Clarify that the lighthouse and the northernmost point are different spots: the true northernmost marker (Sakkotai Cape) lies ~4.2 km west of the Point Pedro lighthouse, and the lighthouse compound is viewed from outside.
Things to do
- Start at sunrise for views before clouds build
- Carry 1L+ water; summit vendors overcharge
- Check leech socks in wet season (central hills)
- Download the offline map — signal dies on ridges
Cost breakdown
Most viewpoints are free or a few hundred LKR. Knuckles and Horton Plains permits run higher; guides LKR 2,000–5,000 (Oct 2026 typicals — confirm locally).
Culture to know before you go
Stay on marked paths; tea estates are workplaces, not parks. Ask estate workers before photographing pickers.
Costs are island-typical ranges (October 2026), not promises — confirm locally. Etiquette notes follow the place type (Hike & Viewpoint).
